What Education Goes Into Becoming an Orthodontist?

Perhaps you are considering pursuing a career as an orthodontist. Here’s a closer look at your potential journey.

The Process of Becoming an Orthodontist

As you pursue post-secondary education, make sure that you’re taking all the required classes for dental school. It takes most orthodontists between four and five years to earn the required credits for dental school.

Most orthodontists recommend applying for dental school a year before you receive your undergraduate degree. Once you are accepted into dental school, you’ll probably have another four years of coursework to complete.

Dental school provides a complete look at dentistry. If you become a general dentist, you’ll be asked to use several skills instead of relying on a singular thing. Dental school also gives you a chance to figure out if you would like to pursue a special aspect of dentistry instead of general education.

If you decide on a particular career path, consider applying for residency during your senior year of dental school. Once you graduate, you’ll start a two or three-year residency to gain more knowledge. Most orthodontists have at least 10 years of school to complete before officially starting their careers.
